Genre, Audiences and Institutions :

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:christinakane:Desktop:220px-Fatal_attraction_poster.jpgGenre, Audiences and Institutions:

Why is genre a relevant concept for audiences?

Genre it is relevant for an audience in the idea that it’s the first thing they look at when discovering a film they have never seen before.

How do genre effect film production companies (the companies that makes the movie)?

Genre is good for the film industries because they make profit to them- films sequels, TV Series, Rock Genres etc. They are good for profit because the audience pays for them consistently and sometimes very well. The audience is attracted to genre material and pays for it because it takes pleasure and satisfaction from the material. The producers are happy to make genre material because if it is familiar to the audience, everyone knows how to handle it. Genre tends to confirm what we believe and what we want to believe.

Why is genre useful for film distribution companies (the companies that market and advertise films)?

Notes taken from “More Than Meets The Eye” , By Graeme Burton.

All media material gives some kind of pleasure to the audience – through predictable repeated elements it can provide pleasure and reinforce to the understanding of the audience – sharing generic conventions, e.g. the western, musical, thriller, sci-fi and so on, all these areas can be reinforced but challenged and subverted.
