Evaluation Task Two :

2.) How does your media product represent particular social groups ?

Our thriller is extremely male dominant throughout, this is shown heavily through our thriller only being represented by two males. This can then lead towards a stereotype being shown that men are presented as more violent then women, as well as the violence being represented in our thriller, would be suggested to seem more realistic then if it was cast with females. Our opening sequence evokes a strong sense of masculinity throughout with the strong influence of violence as well as graphic imagery involving blood, this is done to evoke towards the viewers how much pain the dominant character is willing to put himself through in order to receive that specific satisfaction that he needs, this immediately leads us towards the idea that if needs to place himself through that much torture, then he is presenting towards the audience an extreme cry for help ? This is heavily emphasized in Mark Harron's physiologically thriller comedy "American Psycho", where by because the character is a complete lunatic and can't control his emotions, it leads him towards the conclusion of killing people, which satisfies him throughout his chosen lifestyle. Our Thriller popularity would majority appeal most to a young contemporary European based audience. This is mainly because of the two white actors we used throughout our thriller, the actors portrayed a young middle class, contemporary aspect to which would automatically would appeal to a young audience, in particular though teenaged boys, due to the extremely relatable appearance as well as well as the strong sense of violence, which stereotypically appeals more to men then of women.

Below I have presented images of what the inspirational view of our opening sequence would actually be, which is an extremely stereotypical image of middle-class teenaged boys, however despite that estimation of just white middle-class boys as well as young men enjoying our thriller, the topic of violence also fascinates a much wider target audience of people from a variety of different ethnicity's.

I feel that you need to identify the social groups that you want to represent. In your case it is a very masculine protagonist. The male is young and is represented as having a psychological illness - a split personality. So it this a very unusual representation. We more often than not see men as strong willed, active - not really associated with mental illness. So how has this social group been represented as such - is this typical? What about the use of the voiceover - what are you trying to represent about the group - philosophical/ free willed.
For analysis of masculinity in the media you may want to make reference to this website:
